Not Ashamed of the Gospel: Power and Boldness from Romans 1:16

"For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile." That single sentence from
Romans 1:16 is one of the most striking declarations in all of Scripture.

Paul’s words are bold because the Gospel was not seen as impressive or powerful by the standards of the Roman world. A crucified Messiah sounded foolish to many and offensive to others, yet Paul insists that this message carries the very power of God to rescue and transform human lives.

Understanding the Power Behind the Gospel

The Greek word Paul uses for "power" is dunamis, the root of our word "dynamite." He’s not describing a polite religious suggestion. He’s describing an active, transforming force at work in the world.

The power of the Gospel is what raises spiritually dead people to life. It breaks addiction, restores broken families, and changes the direction of a person's entire future. This is why Paul could stand in hostile cities and keep speaking. He had seen what the message actually does.

Who Is the Gospel For?

Paul makes the reach of the Gospel very clear: everyone who believes. Jew and Gentile. Educated and uneducated. Moral and broken. Every category of person is included.

The Gospel of salvation is not reserved for people who have it together. It meets people exactly where they are. Understanding what salvation really means helps us share it without putting up artificial barriers. No background disqualifies someone.

This truth should fill us with urgency. If the Gospel is for everyone, then everyone deserves to hear it.

Living Unashamed: Boldness in Everyday Life

Here are some practical ways to show you are not ashamed of the Gospel:

  • Pray daily for the people around you who do not yet know Jesus

  • Start conversations by asking genuine questions about what people believe

  • Share your story because your personal testimony carries real weight

  • Study the Gospel so you can explain it simply and clearly

  • Remember who you represent, and let that settle any fear

Every believer is called to this. Boldness grows when we trust the message more than we fear the reaction.

Go, Proclaim, and Trust the Power

Gospel verses about salvation remind us again and again that God saves people through the proclaimed word. Our job is not to convince or pressure anyone. Our job is simply to speak the truth.

The meaning of Romans 1:16 is that the power to save does not come from human persuasion, but from the Gospel itself. Trust it. The freedom found in Christ is worth every awkward conversation, every risk, and every moment of stepping forward in faith.
